Vintage Dooney & Bourke R47 Carpet Bag Top Handle Satchel

This is an authentic Dooney & Bourke All-Weather Leather (AWL) Carpet Bag, also known as the Surrey Carrier, Model R47 — the smallest size in this three-size series.

Dating from the early 1980s, this is one of Dooney & Bourke’s beautifully understated designs from the era. Its classy, minimal silhouette was highly appealing, with a shape reminiscent of the Essex Carrier, but with its own distinctive details — including the additional leather pads and Dooney & Bourke logo detail on the back.

Classic American Craftsmanship

Born in the USA, this DB AWL Carpet Bag / Surrey Carrier was handcrafted from gorgeous, substantial Bone and British Tan leather — a timeless colour combination that works beautifully throughout the year.

The minimal hardware is made from chunky solid brass, while the traditional Dooney & Bourke yellow stitching provides the perfect contrast against the Black and British Tan leather.

The overall look is wonderfully classic and understated — simple, cool, and unmistakably vintage Dooney & Bourke.

I carefully cleaned the entire bag, inside and out, using a professional leather cleansing cream. The edges were gently polished with a matching leather protection cream, followed by a smooth leather oil cream to nourish the leather and help maintain its beautiful natural shine.

All solid brass hardware has also been carefully polished.

To add an extra touch of charm, I have also handcrafted a matching drawstring dust bag using a vintage calendar towel from the same era.

It’s a unique little detail made especially to complement this special vintage piece — and hopefully spark a little joy every time you see it.

Careful Packaging & Shipping

Your bag will be carefully prepared with shape-support padding, sealed in a protective plastic bag, and shipped in a sturdy box for added protection during transit.

The handbag will be shipped with tracking and insurance.

Condition:-

Top Handle - In excellent condition with very minimal signs of use. Top-handle bags tend to develop noticeable darkening in this particular area, but this one remains exceptionally clean and well-preserved.

Bag Body - In excellent condition with no stains, tears, or watermarks. The leather is very firm and structured, allowing the bag to stand upright steadily on its own. No noticeable signs of aging or uneven leather bending.

Front Closure - Very clean overall, with some natural wrinkling around the notches from use.

Interior - Gently used and very clean, with minimal signs of wear.
